Fascinating title, right? Well, that's the name of the book that I've spent much of the day reading so it felt appropriate.
I spent many hours today at the Gateway Cafe, which is only a few minutes walk from my dorm. It's nice to have something close by, even if it is only open on weekdays. I've been doing a lot of my reading for my Life of the Mind: Key Texts in European Thought class today. To be honest, a lot of it is going over my head, so I'm hoping our class discussion will clear some things up!

There's a beautiful building, which you can kind of see in my picture, that I can see everyday when I walk back and forth from my hall. It has the kind of lovely architecture you'd expect from the University of St Andrews.

In other good news, my
Lives of Scottish Women book came in today! We aren't required to buy any books for our classes here; instead, they have a copy (or sometimes, blessedly, multiple copies) of them in the school library that we can check out instead. It's a bit strange to get used to and while it's lovely not to spend hundreds of dollars on books for one semester, it's also frustrating when someone already has the book you need. This is the one book we're going to be using in my Scottish Women class all term long, so I caved and bought myself a copy so I don't have to keep checking it out. I found one for cheap on Amazon that used to be a library book, but it's actually in quite good condition!
I took this picture from my window today, because the clouds looked very strange. It was almost apocalyptic looking, though we haven't even gotten any snow or rain. I heard back that I didn't get a role in the play I auditioned for. I'm not that upset about it; I'm just glad I tried! Here's to hoping the next thing I take a chance on actually works out. xx

ReplyDeleteI was accepted to study at St Andrews next year as an international student, and in my research I came across your blog. I've been enjoying reading it. I like how you haven't romanticized life as a student studying abroad - I appreciate how difficult it must be. I hope that you get increasingly acquainted with things ASAP. I'm sure it will happen faster than you think. I'm sorry you didn't get the part in that play, I hope you will next time! Good luck with everything, I hope to hear more about your adventures soon.
